Willie Thomas Lovett killed in Greene County Officer-Involved shooting

A tragic incident unfolded in Greene County on Sunday morning, resulting in the death of 54-year-old Willie Thomas Lovett following an officer-involved shooting. The Greene County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with the Snow Hill Police Department, responded to a residence on Judge Hardy Street in Maury around 10:00 am after receiving reports of a breaking and entering in progress.

Upon arrival at the scene, deputies encountered the resident of the home, who had fled after a male intruder entered. The resident informed law enforcement that the suspect was still inside the residence. Deputies approached the home and confirmed the presence of the male suspect, identified as Willie Thomas Lovett.

Law enforcement engaged with Lovett, resulting in a physical altercation between him and a deputy. During the altercation, the deputy discharged his weapon, striking Lovett. Despite immediate medical attention from EMS personnel, Lovett tragically succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The circumstances surrounding Lovett’s actions and the events leading up to the altercation remain under investigation by the Greene County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Matt Sasser has requested the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI) to conduct an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting, adhering to standard procedure in such cases.
