A tragic incident unfolded at Grand Lake on Friday when Zach Tawwater, an 18-year-old high school senior from Oklahoma City, drowned while swimming with friends. Tawwater, who attended Bishop McGuinness High School, leaped from the dock’s roof into the lake but failed to resurface, according to authorities.
Derek Washington, president of Next Level Basketball and Tawwater’s coach, expressed his deep sorrow over the loss. “It is truly devastating and difficult to comprehend,” Washington said. He praised Tawwater’s strength and determination on the basketball court. “He was the powerhouse on the court, unafraid to get down and dirty,” Washington remarked. He also remembered Tawwater as “incredibly funny – quirky and a gentle giant.”
Tawwater’s athletic talents extended beyond basketball. He was a standout football player, playing a crucial role in his team’s success last year. His leadership and skill helped Bishop McGuinness High School achieve eight wins and reach the state semi-finals. On June 30, Tawwater received an offer to play Division I football at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, a testament to his exceptional abilities on the field.
Washington highlighted Tawwater’s positive impact on his teammates and peers. “Everyone enjoyed playing alongside him. He was always a great presence to have around,” he added, underscoring the significant loss felt by the community.
